Letter from the Headteacher
Welcome from Headteacher Mrs Cecilia Lewis
St Mary’s School exists to provide an education for children which acknowledges God as the Creator and themselves as created beings who respond to God’s love and gift of life through all that they do.
The Church believes that parents are the first teachers of their children and
you therefore lay down the foundations of their future learning.
When your child is Baptised they become members of God’s family and
inheritors of God’s promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. The Catholic
School’s role is to help children and their parents to realise this potential.
St Mary’s School provides a curriculum which enables children to understand
who they are and what their place is in God’s plan. This is not done solely
through formal religious education lessons but through the whole of the school’s life and work.
St Mary’s fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum, as all other
schools do, but with an added dimension of opportunities to apply knowledge in a practical and meaningful way. We also promote in children an inquisitive attitude to learning which helps them to become life long learners who will bring benefit to themselves and others as they mature and grow.
Like all human institutions we are not perfect and therefore we promote a
culture which allows children and adults to make mistakes, as learners, in a
context which promotes the Christian values of penance, forgiveness and
reconciliation.
In having your child Baptised you have entered into a partnership with the
Church to have an education which gives a faith and moral dimension to their
life. The Catholic School is education for eternity.
You will notice that many of the School Governors have, or have had, children
educated at St Mary’s which is a vote of confidence in itself. We would like to
invite you to have this same opportunity and we would value the privilege of
sharing with you the education of your child.
